Rikugien Garden is your destination this morning, a strolling garden laid out in 1695 and restored in the 18th century. Once the residence of powerful Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, there are 88 stops around the lake, symbolic representations of classical Japanese literature.
The rhythm achieved by alternating dark and bright zones, spacious and confined areas, sunlit groves and mysterious forests, produces virtually a musical effect. The massed planting of Japanese maple along the river should set the scene for autumn.
New Otani Hotel, Tokyo

Hear the history behind this sacred region and its traditions.
See the giant cryptomerias over 1000 years old, the Shinkyo Sacred Bridge across the turbulent waters of the Daiya River, and giant bronze and stone lanterns all wrapped in a mountain mist and maples dotted amongst the lush green. The entire site is World Heritage Listed.

Autumn at Meiji Jingu Shrine means one thing in full bloom.
Welcome to Kikkaten, the shrine’s annual Chrysanthemum Exhibition, where Japan’s most celebrated flower becomes living art.
Held each autumn, Kikkaten honours the kiku, a symbol of longevity and the Imperial family. The exhibition features elaborate chrysanthemum displays in multiple artistic styles, including:
🌼 Chrysanthemum bonsai (carefully dwarfed and shaped like miniature trees)
🌼 Kengai (cliff style), where cascades of blooms spill dramatically downward
🌼 Sanbon-jitate (three-tailoring), a classical form training three perfectly balanced flowering stems
One of the highlights is the series of miniature landscape displays, inspired by famous scenery.
These landscapes draw from traditional Japanese arts:
✨ Saikei: Living tray landscapes using rocks, moss, small trees and seasonal plants (sometimes including chrysanthemums) to recreate natural scenery.
✨ Bonkei: Tray landscapes made from dry materials like sand, stones and figurines, blending horticulture with artistic storytelling.
Chrysanthemum exhibitions at Meiji Jingu continue a tradition over a century old, where timing, pruning and patience ensure peak blooms for autumn. Set beneath towering cedar trees and crisp fall air, Kikkaten is Tokyo at its most serene, a celebration of seasonality, craftsmanship and fleeting beauty 🌼✨

Autumn gold in the heart of Tokyo 🌟🍁
Meiji Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue turns into a glowing tunnel of yellow every autumn, thanks to its iconic rows of Ginkgo biloba trees. Planted in the 1920s as part of Tokyo’s grand outer garden project for the Meiji-era Memorial Park, these trees are now nearly a century old and meticulously cared for.
What makes this avenue so special? The precise pruning. Each tree is carefully trained year after year to create that perfectly symmetrical archway, with lower branches removed and the upper canopy shaped to form a natural golden ceiling. It’s a beautiful mix of nature and Japanese craftsmanship, and peak colour usually hits from late November to early December 🍂💛
A living autumn cathedral you have to walk through at least once in your life. Maybe we should be planting iconic avenues of these tough, drought and pest resistant, long lived trees in Australia? What do you think? Ginkgoes have trouble free, non invasive root systems and can be planted in pavements in urban environments without causing any damage.
Just make sure that you buy a male clone tree as the smell of the female fruits is quite putrid!

Flowers by day, illuminations by night, Japan does it better every single time.

If you’re anywhere near Nagoya in autumn, don’t miss the flower filled garden theme park of Nabana no Sato! This flower park turns into a full-blown seasonal dream, blending lush plant displays with one of Japan’s most spectacular illuminations.
Inside the massive Begonia Garden glasshouse, you’re met with ceilings dripping in color: begonias, fuchsias, impatiens and vibrant seasonal blooms arranged in floating baskets and huge flowering walls. Step into the other glasshouses and you’ll find tropical collections, delicate orchids, Lillies, succulents and rare varieties that feel straight out of a botanical wonderland.
Outside, autumn steals the show. The gardens burst with glorious rose blooms, towering dahlias, some as big as your head, and sweeping fields of Cosmos, Petunias, Zinnias and Allyssum in soft pinks, whites, and sunset tones, perfect for that dreamy fall photo backdrop. The crisp air, the scent of flowers, and the turning leaves of the maples and oaks make everything feel extra magical.
And then… the sun goes down.
Nabana no Sato’s legendary illumination lights up the night with millions of LEDs forming tunnels of light, glowing landscapes, and immersive scenes that change each year. It’s one of Japan’s largest light shows and honestly feels like stepping inside a fairytale.
If you want an autumn experience that blends nature, color, and pure wow-factor—you’ve found it!

Nagoya Castle in autumn is an absolute show-stopper with amber cherry leaves drifting around the moat, fiery momiji maples lighting up the grounds, and crisp air filled with centuries of stories. Originally built in 1612 by the Tokugawa shogunate, the castle was heavily damaged during WWII and later rebuilt, restoring its towering presence and reconnecting the city with its feudal past.
The surrounding gardens still echo their original Edo-period design, showcasing harmony, power and elegance. We strolled among stately black pines, Japanese cedars, cherry trees, azaleas, and glowing Ginkgo avenues. In autumn, the whole landscape transforms into a warm palette of reds, golds and amber.
The seasonal highlight of our visit was the glorious Chrysanthemum Festival!
Each autumn, the grounds showcase stunning kiku (chrysanthemum) varieties, from enormous multi-petal blooms to single-stem exhibition types. You’ll also find exquisite chrysanthemum bonsai, trained over years to create sculptural, flowing forms that highlight the plant’s strength and elegance. These miniature masterpieces are a highlight for garden lovers and a rare chance to see kiku artistry up close.
If you love history, gardens, and autumn colour, Nagoya Castle is the perfect seasonal escape. Plus, don’t forget the performing monkey!

One of my favourite gardens in Japan, Ginkaku-ji, Kyoto’s iconic Silver Pavilion was magical on our autumn visit!
Built in 1482 by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, this Zen temple wasn’t actually meant to be silver, its name comes from the moonlit glow that once shimmered on its dark lacquered exterior. Today, it’s the gardens that steal the show… especially in autumn!
We wandered through the Higashiyama-style strolling garden, where every turn revealed fiery maple canopies, deep green pines, delicate camellias and moss carpets that look almost unreal after the autumn rains.
The garden is like a living piece of art. The kongetsudai (Moon Viewing Sand Mound) is said to represent Mount Fuji or the Buddhist Mount Sumeru and is swept daily and rebuilt every month. The ginshadan (Sea of Silver Sand) is raked with meticulous precision, like the brushstrokes of a master painter to create perfect ripples that symbolise waves and sea. Centuries-old pine trees are pruned by hand, branch by branch, using traditional Niwaki techniques to sculpt sweeping silhouettes that frame the pavilion, pond and mountains behind it. This allows sunlight to reach the moss and surface of the water below them.
Even the moss is tended with almost surgical care by the team of gardeners creating a soft green contrast to the red blaze of autumn leaves and sculptured trees.
The timing of our visit provided the perfect balance of wabi-sabi tranquility and autumn drama.
