Ireland’s mild climate has endowed an extraordinary collection of gardens. Our itinerary includes the best Irish gardens; grand public estates & exclusive & intimate private sanctuaries. Stay in Belfast, Galway, Killarney, Cork, Waterford & Dublin.
Check in to The Fitzwilliam Hotel. Our tour starts this evening. Meet your Tour Leader, Colin Barlow and your travel companions at a Welcome Dinner, where Colin will outline the highlights of your tour.
The Fitzwilliam, Belfast
We are travelling east this morning to Newtownards, County Down to Mount Stewart. Irresistibly flamboyant describes Mount Stewart, and its owner Edith, Lady Londonderry, who built the garden with her husband Charles Vane-Tempest-Stewart in 1921 with ex-servicemen from WW1 as her labour force. Built as a series of compartmentalised gardens to the south and west of the grand manor home, it was completed in less than 10 years. In this subtropical corner of Ireland, Edith’s Mount Stewart is an intense, fairytale world of frivolous myth-making all now safely held in the hands of the National Trust.
A guided tour at the Mount Stewart Manor (house interior) is included and its fine suite of gardens. Edith’s Italian Garden was her first (inspired by Villa Gamberaia near Florence), Spanish Garden, Lily Wood, Peace Garden where family pets are buried, Mairi Garden, Dodo Terrace with its famous and humorous collection of Portland cement creatures, Shamrock Garden with the Red Hand of Ulster picked out in bedding plants and an Irish harp fashioned in topiary yew. Lunch in the café (own expense) before we return to Belfast.
Visit the King Charles Coronation Garden which was unveiled in time for the historic event. The transformation of a bowling green on the shores of Belfast Lough was inspired by the King’s passion for ecology and the environment with many of the species e native, peat-free and grown locally. The garden was designed by Award-winning garden designer Diarmuid Gavin. Afternoon at Leisure.
The Fitzwilliam, Belfast
Morning visit to Rowallane, in Drumlin country, County Down, where Rev John Moore started making his estate in 1858. He joined fields to make a large pleasure ground where he planted trees. His nephew, Hugh Armytage Moore inherited the estate in 1903. This was the exciting plant-hunting era, especially in China, where he sponsored collectors such as George Forrest, Ernest Henry Wilson and Frank Kingdon-Ward. Rowallane is now in the hands of the National Trust, and the beneficiary of a famous plant collection. See the Pleasure Grounds, Edwardian Rock Garden, Water Garden, Inner walled Garden, Spring Ground with rhododendrons and daffodils and the Paddock with delightful wildflower meadow.
Return to your hotel with time to relax before an afternoon visit to the Titanic Museum with interactive galleries to discover the sights, smells, sounds and stories of the ship, and the people and city that made her. Walk along the slipways where Titanic was built and launched 113 years ago.
The Fitzwilliam, Belfast
Travelling to Galway today via the UNESCO World Heritage site Giant’s Causeway with its stunning hexagonal basalt columns nestled along Northern Ireland’s dramatic Antrim Coast. Lunch stop (at your own expense) in picturesque Cavan, nestled by the serene River Shannon. Next, delve into Athlone’s rich history, founded in the 12th Century. Finally, arrive in Galway to check in to our hotel with dinner included tonight.
The Ardilaun Hotel, Galway
Morning orientation tour of Galway before we discover the Connemara with a visit to Kylemore Abbey with its Victorian Walled Garden. In its sublime location at the head of Pollacappul Lough, Kylemore was built as a castle by Mitchell Henry, completed in 1871.
This iconic castle needed a fairytale garden with one of the largest walled gardens in Ireland, a model of Victorian horticulture. There were twenty-one interconnected heated glasshouses growing grape vines, fruits, palms, plant house, stove house, ferneries, and banana house, that offered warm shelter in the eternally damp conditions. The garden was divided by a stream, with flower garden, kitchen and herb garden, rock garden and double herbaceous border. The estate changed hands and languished until finally in 1920 it was sold to a community of Benedictine nuns who had fled Ypres in First World War. The next chapter (Kylemore Abbey) saw the nuns raising vegetables for the nuns and girls’ school they operated, in a corner of the once immense walled garden. The whole estate was desolate. But the nuns raised funds for its restoration; from bank loans, from EU funds, they gathered 1.5 million pounds. Now the abbey and gardens welcome 200,000 visitors a year. Two of the glasshouses have been restored. What a triumph!
Explore the unique Connemara, this afternoon, this scenic corner of County Galway, a stunning patchwork of soft grey mountains, wild terrain, rugged bogs, hidden valleys, waterfalls, shimmering lakes and golden beaches. At times austere, at times sublime, Connemara is a place of legend, folklore and profound beauty. The late writer and cartographer Tim Robinson spoke of the landscape’s “huge, luminous spaces”, and it’s no surprise that artists and photographers, poets and playwrights have found inspiration here. Connemara is not just about the landscape, it’s about the Irish language, cherished by the locals.
Head back to Galway via Leanaun Village, a small mountain-side town (setting for the 1990 film ‘The Field’ starring Richard Harris and John Hurt). Late arrival back in Galway.
The Ardilaun Hotel, Galway
We are travelling to Killarney today across the historic Burren region of County Clare. First stop is Ballyvaughan, with a dramatic Burren limestone backdrop overlooking Galway Bay. Meet plantsman, Carl Wright in his Caher Bridge Garden near Fanore, that is designed and planted around a restored riverside cottage that Carl rescued and rebuilt. He added walls with nest chambers for birds. The Caher River, that drains the Burren, runs through the garden.
Carl is an expert about the flora and fauna of the Burren. He maintains two thirds of his property as a nature reserve. Follow the Burren Way through some of the most spectacular scenery in Burren National Park. From the rugged Atlantic coast to ancient woodlands, the Burren is a rocky and diverse landscape that covers 130 sq kilometres. Over 600 flowering plants grow here, 70% of the country’s native flora. And the light is quite magical reflecting off the pale stone karst limestone. It’s a scenic drive to Doolin, a dramatic landscape on the edge of the Burren and close to the majestic Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Islands. Continue to Killarney, check in to your hotel. Dinner is included this evening.
Aghadoe Height Hotel and Spa, Killarney
Explore the bewitching Ring of Kerry, a 179 km circuit of the Iveragh Peninsula. It’s a place of wild excess, with the sandstone flanks of Ireland’s tallest mountains, the Macgillycuddy Reeks, pleated and folded by glaciers, that descend into moist valleys. Narrow roads make a rickrack braid-like track around the circuit.
Morning tea stop (own expense) in Cahersiveen that sits at the bottom of Bentee Mountain and overlooks Valentia Harbour. Lunch stop in Sneem (own expense) before we travel back to Killarney via Moll’s Gap a narrow mountain pass named after Moll Kissane and Ladies View, another scenic viewpoint.
Aghadoe Height Hotel and Spa, Killarney
Our destination today is Cork, with a stop in Glencarriff where we take a ferry across Bantry Bay to Garinish Island and Ilnacullin off the coast of West Cork. It’s the wildly romantic partnership of Annan Bryce, then owner of the near-barren island and Harold Peto, architect and garden designer. Bryce and his wife Violet dreamed of an island paradise where sub-tropical jungle would surround a structured classic garden, designed by Peto. Financial constraints curtailed their plans, but the resulting garden is monumental in its singlemindedness.
Ferry back to Glencarriff and lunch in Bantry. Continue to Cork, check in to your hotel in the city centre. Dinner included this evening in your hotel.
Imperial Hotel, Cork
A day around Cork. First stop is Mary Byrne’s remarkable Hillside Garden, situated on a gentle south facing slope, enclosed by woodlands with a view overlooking Cork Harbour and the Lee Estuary. Sprawling over two acres with old trees, pine, beech and larch with an under-story of hazel and holly, and a haze of blue bells in the spring. Planted with rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and hydrangeas in a mixed boarder including Betula jacquemontii.
We will be ready for lunch when we arrive at Darina Allen’s famous Ballymalloe cookery school. Darina has created a series of kitchen gardens, part of a 100-acre organic farm, which produces fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, and dairy products for the kitchen. High quality ingredients… is the mantra of the entire operation here at Ballymaloe; “it’s a serious food-raising enterprise” says journalist Jane Powers in her grand book ‘The Irish Garden’. Take a guided tour of the gardens after lunch. Travel back to Cork.
Imperial Hotel, Cork
We are heading to Waterford today with a stop at Blarney Castle. After a guided tour of the gardens and coffee stop, we will travel to Waterford. Visit the Waterford Crystal Centre where lunch is available (own expense).
Check into your hotel in the city center, on the banks of the River Suir. Remainder of the day free for you to explore the museums and the lively shopping district. Meet up for dinner this evening in the hotel restaurant.
Marina Hotel, Waterford
Meet Rachel Darlington this morning in her fabulous Douentza Garden in Wexford, with large herbaceous borders and exotic plants. You will see carnivorous plants, hardy orchids and a large integrated greenhouse filled with tropical plants. Rachel is a master gardener, journalist and lecturer, and runs her You Tube channel ‘Gardening at Douentza’.
Morning tea will be available before we leave for Powerscourt, grand in the high Victorian tradition, with a fascinating history that reads like an Edwardian novel. Take a gentle walk through a series of magnificent garden spaces: the Italian Garden with its lake lies at the core of this garden. The Japanese Garden that is a delightfully Edwardian nestles in its hollow grotto, installed in 1908 just as Japanese fever was captivating Western Europe. Every flat space is garnished with statues. A huge flight of granite steps bisects the space and descends triumphantly to the pond. The walled garden with its ornate gates is home to a spectacular double herbaceous border, a bouncy bold multi-coloured affair. This is Ireland’s grandest garden! Lunch will be available (own expense).
Travel into Dublin, check in to The Grafton Hotel, a modern art deco hotel in the heart of Dublin’s City Centre. Dinner is included this evening in your hotel.
The Grafton Hotel, Dublin
Meet TJ Maher in his ground-breaking Patthana Garden in Kiltegan, County Wicklow. There’s a lot happening here; a lower cobbled courtyard with its potting shed and sunken meditation room. The main courtyard has a small wildlife pond and an extensive collection of hardy and exotic plants. Circular granite steps lead to the Inner Garden with borders of herbaceous perennials, tender plants, annuals and unusual shrubs and trees. See his exciting new ‘Torc’ garden. Patthana is gardened organically with many plants chosen for their attraction to wildlife. Return to Dublin with free time for lunch then a guided city tour that includes the National Botanic Garden and Trinity College and the famous Book of Kells.
The Grafton Hotel, Dublin
Travel to the outskirts of Dublin this morning to Lamb to meet Jimi Blake. It’s hard to describe the enthusiasm of Jimi Blake, whose garden Hunting Brook has attracted such acclaim. “I’ve spent my life discovering stand-out plants. I like to be bold, adventurous, and unexpected. My planting style is creative and unconventional. I don’t play by the rule book. I grow exotic plants here in Hunting Brook that no one would have imagined possible. I’m always trialling new plants and surprising plant combinations from very different habitats”. Lunch will be served before we leave for the garden of Jimi’s sister June.
Abundant and exuberant, June’s Garden is intimately connected to the place. The bones are perfect, giving proportion and balance to the profusion in her borders. Jane Powers says it all! “June Blake has created … a piece of poetry … deeply integrated in the landscape and rooted in history”.
Travel back into Dublin with the remainder of the day at leisure.
The Grafton Hotel, Dublin
Two exciting gardens today in Howth a scenic peninsula just north of Dublin with its scenic harbour, pretty beaches and wildflower-covered sea cliffs. First stop is Ardan, a dynamic and ever evolving garden on rugged mountain slope that Nuala and Conall have terraced and subdivided with wind breaks to create a series of intimate and sheltered spaces. There is a White Garden, Exotic Garden, Pond and Bog Garden, Woodland Garden and Vegetable Garden. Ardan has been recognised as a garden of the UNESCO Dublin Bay Biosphere because of the created habitat for wildlife, embracing the environmental conservation status of the peninsula. Free time for lunch today in a nearby pub.
A short distance from Howth Summit the Medina Garden stands as a testament to nature’s resilience and the unwavering dedication of its caretakers. Despite its exposed location, the garden finds refuge behind deep, towering hedges, which act as nature’s sentinels, protecting the delicate flora from the coastal winds. This haven for rare and unusual trees and shrubs truly thrives in the cosy microclimate that has been carefully crafted by Karl and Marcella. Return to Dublin with Farewell Dinner included this evening.

Hidden in the seaside village of Howth is a garden that feels like stepping into another world. The Medina Garden, created by Karl Flynn & Marcella Dunne, is a lush tropical haven packed with palms, ferns, bamboo and exotic treasures you wouldn’t expect to find this close to Dublin Bay.
Winding paths lead you past a Japanese style corner, woodland glades, colourful borders and even a trickling water feature that makes the whole space feel magical. It’s only a third of an acre, but every inch is bursting with surprises. From rare plants to clever design, this award-winning private garden is a little slice of paradise by the sea, proof that passion and creativity can turn even the wild Irish coastline into a tropical escape. #irishgardens #ireland #howth #garden #gardening #gardens #plant #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantstagram #tropical #tropicalgarden #rt_ireland #pond #dublin #dublinbay #coastalgarden #gardensofinstagram #gardensofireland
Hidden in the Wicklow countryside lies a plant lover’s dream, June Blake’s Garden. Spread across three acres and wrapped around an old granite farmyard, this space is anything but ordinary. With bold, fiery borders that burst with colour, shady woodland corners filled with ferns and bamboo, and even a sleek reflecting pool that mirrors the plants and sky in perfect stillness. Every turn feels like stepping into a different world, from tropical vibes to prairie planting, from calm, minimalist courtyards to wild, exuberant herbaceous displays. What makes it special? It’s the mix of drama and serenity. The delicate grasses and exotic colourful plants set against dry stone walls, with winding gravel and mown paths that invite you to keep exploring the garden, meadows and woodland beyond. June Blake isn’t just a gardener, she’s a plant artist and keen collector. Her garden is living proof that bold ideas, colour, and texture can transform a landscape into pure magic. If you’re ever in Ireland, this garden should be on your list of top gardens to visit! You can even stay in accommodation on site or have a delightful lunch like we did. #ireland #irishgarden #plants #plantstagram #plantsmakemehappy #flower #flowers #flowerstagram #herbaceous #pool #countrylife #juneblakesgarden #tinode #rt_ireland #gardens #gardensfromeden #garden #countywicklow
With a love for the unusual, a fearless spirit, and an eye for the extraordinary, Jimi Blake has turned 20 acres of Irish countryside into a vibrant naturalistic paradise. This devoted plant-hunter fills his garden with rare treasures from around the world, creating a space that’s adventurous, exotic, and beautifully wild. We were empowered by Jimi’s bold use of colour and texture in his garden, and are now inspired to experiment even more in our own gardens in Australia. The extensive range of unusual and rare plants, in particular from the Araliaceae family, were growing in many different aspects of the garden from understory planting to full sun. Jimi grew them from seed collected on his plant hunting expeditions to China! The personal tour with Jimi was a highlight, plus meeting Doris, his Old English Sheepdog. We then explored the enchanting woodland and the sweeping meadow before the light rain arrived.

Patthana Garden in County Wicklow is a supreme example of how a garden can be a both a piece of sublime art and connect harmoniously with nature. This magnificent and colourful flower garden is like a notebook on how to use colour creatively in garden design. It is not surprising, as the creator of Patthana Garden is T.J. Maher, who is both an artist and a gardener, qualified in Fine Art and horticulture. The blending of these pursuits and interests has created a garden that is like a painting at every turn. We had the pleasure of a personally guided tour, in which T.J. explained the development of the garden and his philosophy behind its design. I don’t think that I have ever seen so many bees in a garden before! The flower filled planting palette that he has created provides the ideal environment for wildlife and insects to flourish.
The exquisite new tea rooms were ready for our visit, and we enjoyed a delightful morning tea to cap off a wonderful visit. Many of the group purchased T.J. Maher’s book ‘Grounded in the Garden’, An artist’s guide to creating a beautiful garden in harmony with nature. The book tells the story of the garden and gives valuable insights on how you can get the same effect. I’m looking forward to reading my copy! #ireland #irishgardens #irishgardening #gardens #plants #plantstagram #colour #painting #patthanagarden #rt_ireland #gardensfromeden #rossgardentours #flower #flowers #flowerlover #flowerstagram
Set in the wild County Wicklow countryside, overlooking the magnificent Sugarloaf Mountain are Powerscourt Gardens, one of the finest gardens in Europe. The spectacular gardens are the realisation of the 6th Viscount’s vision to replicate the grandeur in scale and beauty of the many international gardens he visited including Versailles and the Schönbrunn.
The design of the gardens reflects the desire to create a garden that is part of the wider borrowed landscape. The beautiful view of the gardens from the upper terrace shows perfect balance between the garden slopes, terraces, flower beds and lake, as every detail of the gardens has been meticulously designed.
The gardens were created over two main periods. A formal plan for the gardens was first developed alongside the rebuilding of the house in 1743, and many parts of the gardens today include elements of those designs. Most of what we see in the gardens today was designed in the 1840’s by architect Daniel Robertson and implemented during the following forty years. Robertson is said to have suffered from gout and directed operations from a wheelbarrow, as he drank a fortified bottle of sherry! When the sherry finished, work ceased for the day! I am not sure that you could get away with that today! I guided the group around the Classical Italian Garden and through the Walled Garden with the longest double herbaceous borders in Ireland. We then visited the Dolphin Pond and the moving Pet Cemetery before passing the dramatic fountain in Triton Lake with a pair of life size horses watching over it. The symbolic Japanese Garden instilled a sense of reflection with serene views from Lord Londonderry’s Seat high above the garden. The elaborate grotto was like being in another world! The last stop on our tour was Tower Valley, named after the distinctive Pepper Pot Tower in its woodlands. Towering North American conifers provide a breathtaking backdrop to the tower and gardens. #ireland #irishgardens #rt_ireland #powerscourt #powerscourtgardens #italiangarden #herbaceousborder #tower #japanesegarden #gardensfromeden #grotto #countywicklow #plants. #flowers #treestagram #trees
