Tropical Gardens of Hawaii with Graham Ross

Aloha and welcome to Hawaii. Spend time on two islands, Oahu and Kauai. Oahu is a melting pot of culture, the ‘heart of Hawaii’, a bustling metropolis of cultural highlights. Then it’s a short flight to Kauai, the oldest and most beautiful of Hawaii’s main islands. Peter, Paul and Mary will agree!

Sydney – Honolulu (D)

Meet your tour leader Graham Ross at the departure gate at Sydney Airport for your flight to Honolulu.

On arrival visit Forster Botanic Garden in the heart of Honolulu. This living museum features a wonderful collection of tropical plants. Then it’s on to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, also known as The Pink Palace. This Honolulu landmark, right on the beach at Waikiki, has recently undergone a multi-million-dollar refurbishment and is back to its luxurious and romantic best.

Our Welcome Dinner this evening will be in the restaurant of the hotel, overlooking the moon shining on Waikiki.

Manoa Heritage Centre (B)

Step back in time this morning at MHC to explore living connections with Hawai’i’s past. This Native Hawaiian garden featuring endemic and indigenous plants, as well as Polynesian introductions. Hawai‘i also has one of the highest percentage of endangered plant species in the world. Mānoa Heritage Centre preserves species and promotes an understanding of their use and beneficial properties. The first settlers of Hawaii arriving by canoe, brought many of their favourite plants for food, seasoning, medicine, making household items and implements for farming. Taro became the staple of the Hawaiian diet, and they developed hundreds of varieties, adapted to suit diverse terrain and weather conditions. Sweet potato was substituted for taro in the drier areas. Turmeric was used to produce a brilliant yellow orange dye for clothing; coconut for bowls, drums and roof tops; and kawa to ease a painful headache.

Continue to Lili’uokalani Botanic Garden. Portions of this garden were once the property and favourite picnic grounds of Queen Liliʻuokalani, the last reigning monarch of Hawai‘i. She donated her land to the City and County of Honolulu. This developing garden is devoted to native Hawaiian plants and is home to the Nuʻuanu Stream and Waikahalulu Waterfall. Queen Lili‘uokalani inherited the Hawaiian throne in 1891 after the passing of her older brother, King Kalākaua. She ruled until she and the monarchy were overthrown on January.

Last stop today is Koko Crater Botanical Garden, a 60-acre basin inside the landmark Koko Crater on the eastern end of the island of Oahu. The hot, dry climate here makes this garden the ideal location for the dryland collections of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens.

Queen's Emma Summer Palace (B)

Step back into the 19th century this morning with a visit to Queen Emma’s Summer Palace, which is now managed by the Daughters of Hawaii. Membership of the Daughters is open to any woman who is directly descended from a person who lived in Hawaii prior to 1880, with no restrictions to race. A passionate guide will show us through the charming Hawaiian-Victorian palace, and then we’ll explore the exceptional garden. The afternoon is free.

Pearl Harbour National Memorial (B)

Immerse yourself this morning in five historic sites that make up Pearl Harbor today. The Visitor Centre is the gateway to Pearl Harbour Historic Sites: Battleship Missouri Memorial, Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.

USS Arizona Memorial is a place of sombre beauty and quiet reflection, the final resting place of 900 sailors and Marines. Begin at the visitor centre to visit two world-class museums. Watch a film about the attack and see plaques honouring lives lost on that fateful day. Take a US Navy vessel to the memorial built over the USS Arizona. Poignant and powerful, you’ll come face to face with the devastating effects of war, honour the dead, and remember the world-changing events borne of war and peace. It is a place of learning and inspiration, reflection, and contemplation.

The afternoon is free for you to enjoy the facilities in your hotel.

Kauai (B)

We take a morning flight to Kauai, where Allerton Gardens will be our first stop. This was Queen Emma’s garden estate. She named it ‘Lawai Kai’ which means ‘Garden by the Sea’, and carefully introduced exotic species into the natural landscape, including bougainvillea and Morton Bay fig. Between 1938 and 1989 Robert and John Allerton introduced more plants from around the world, along with garden features, such as water channels, cascades, pools and waterfalls, latticed pavilions and European sculpture. It’s eclectic in design and dazzling in botanical diversity.

Opposite, on Kauai’s South Shore we’ll see the spectacular Spouting Horn blowhole, then check in to our hotel, the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa, on the beach at Poipu.

Hanalei and Lumahuli Garden (B)

Hanalei is our destination today, on Kauai’s scenic north shore. We’ll explore the town and the famous pier on Hanalei Bay, and get a good view of the emerald quilt of taro farms from the Hanalei Valley Lookout.

Limahuli Garden and Preserve is nearby, set in a lush tropical valley and surrounded by towering peaks. The American Horticultural Society selected Limahuli as the best natural botanical garden in the USA. We’ll see intriguing lava rock terraces built by Limahuli’s early inhabitants, learn more about taro, and about the native plants of Hawaii, the so-called ‘canoe plants’ brought to the islands by voyaging Polynesians, and the flowers and fruits introduced during Hawaii’s plantation era.

Waimea Canyon (B/D)

You’ll recognise scenes from Jurassic Park when we visit Waimea Canyon on the western side of Kauai this morning. This is the largest canyon in the Pacific and it’s a dramatic sight. Lines in the canyon walls depict the volcanic eruptions and lava flows that have occurred over the centuries. The elevation makes the air 10-15 degrees cooler than in the valley and by afternoon much of the mountain is shrouded in cloud. The afternoon is free to relax and have a swim. Wear your lei tonight for our Farewell Dinner in the resort restaurant!
