Spring is one of the best times to explore New Zealand’s North Island, especially if you’re interested in gardens and natural landscapes. With milder weather, longer days, and a surge of plant life after winter, the region’s public and private gardens become a major draw.
From structured estate gardens to the beautiful countryside, there’s a strong mix of history, horticulture, and seasonal beauty. With all of that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of ten must-see spring destinations across the North Island.
Let’s get started.
Widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s finest private gardens, Ayrlies is a spectacular showcase of artistry and horticultural vision. Originally founded by Beverley McConnell and her late husband Malcolm, the garden spans 12 acres and features everything from sweeping lawns to reflective ponds, subtropicals, perennials, and woodland species.

According to Beverley, “the garden evolved out of a desire to create a larger informal country garden” that was “reminiscent of the homestead gardens” she experienced growing up in Hawkes Bay (Source).
In 2004, decades of hard work culminated in the Ayrlies being officially recognised as an International Garden of Significance, a nod earned from the New Zealand Gardens Trust. Today, the garden is just as beautiful, flowing into the surrounding countryside with pathways meandering through rose-covered arbours, mature trees, and carefully curated borders that are bursting with colour.
There’s a good reason why these gardens are ranked among the top 3 things to do in New Zealand and a top attraction globally on TripAdvisor (Source). Hamilton Gardens is no ordinary public park. It’s a world-class destination that reimagines what a garden can be.
Roughly 1.5 hours from Auckland and situated alongside the Waikato River, Hamilton Gardens is a must-see for garden lovers and cultural explorers alike. In large part, its reputation can be traced back to the brilliant mind of Doctor Peter Sergel, who worked as the Garden’s director from 1995 to 2020.

It was Sergel who formed the idea to split the Hamilton Gardens into three distinctive categories, Paradise, Fantasy, and Productive. As a visitor, you’re truly spoiled for choice. Wander from a traditional Japanese Garden of Contemplation to the Mughal splendour of an Indian Char Bagh, explore the formality of an Italian Renaissance garden, or enter the whimsical world of a Surrealist garden inspired by Dali. There’s something for everyone!
The level of detail in design, architecture, and planting is, in itself, extraordinary. It’s a one-of-one experience that sparks imagination and leaves a lasting impression.
Venture north of Auckland’s CBD and you’ll encounter the Mincher Garden. Mincher is a charming private garden that evokes the refined elegance of Georgian-era English countryside living.
The estate has long perennial borders and a parterre that leads to a cottage-style area nestled among a set of beautiful, ancient apple trees. All the while, you may even get a glimpse of some of NZ’s fascinating native wildlife, including everything from the Grey Teal to Aylesburys, Kingfishers, Shining Cuckoos, Tui, and Kaka.
Flowering cherries signal the arrival of spring, while lush herbaceous borders bloom in harmonious shades. Moving closer to the Georgian style home, you’ll find the kitchen garden, which is another delight. Here, there are orderly rows of vegetables, espaliered fruit trees, and a vintage-style greenhouse bring back the romance of homegrown abundance.
In the surrounding area, there’s a long bog garden, a croquet lawn, and even a pergola espaliered with Manchurian pears.
Meaning “a place of peace” in Māori, Omaio is a soulful garden that gently merges New Zealand’s native landscape with thoughtful curation and design. Also designated as an International Garden of Significance, it features flowing garden beds that echo the rhythms of the nearby sea, as well as native plants such as pūriri and kōwhai.
A trip to Omaio is sure to be any keen gardener’s dream day out. There’s a strong sense of place here, too. The stone walls, wooden structures, and plant choices reflect a commitment to the land and its stories. Quiet pathways wind through relaxing spaces, offering the perfect moment for contemplation.
Omaio is truly a spiritual experience, one that’s restorative, meditative, and grounded in the harmony of humans and nature.
