Arrive Devonport (D)

Meet at Launceston Airport, Tasmania. Travel by coach to Devonport, on the banks of the Mersey River, Tasmania’s third-largest city and a perfect introduction to the island’s scenic north-west. Check-in to the Novotel Hotel for 2 nights with our Welcome Dinner included this evening.

Kaydale (B/L)

Bob Cherry is a master nurseryman. Having travelled the world collecting plants, he has now retired to this beautiful corner of North-West Tasmania and made a beguiling new garden with an unforgettable sense of place. At the time of our visit, poppies, sweet peas and waratahs are picked daily. Spend time with Bob and Derelie this morning in their ‘Master’ garden.

Travel on to Nietta and Kaydale Lodge Garden where two sisters work tirelessly to maintain and extend the garden their parents started. Superb stone walls and fences, astonishing pear walk, grand wisteria arbour, kitchen garden with new greenhouse, stand testament to their endeavours. And when the sun goes down, they get busy in the kitchen bottling, pickling and preserving their fruit and vegetables. In spring it’s awash with bulbs; tulips, fritillarias, erythroniums, trilliums and daffodils. It’s exquisite!

Head back to Devonport along the scenic coast road with the evening free.

Table Cape Tulip Farm (B/L/D)

It’s all about tulips this morning at Van Diemen’s Tulip Farm on beautiful Table Cape, where tulips are planted in giant coloured bands across the landscape. You will think you are in Holland!

Travel inland to Emu Valley and enjoy lunch at the Rhododendron Garden. What started in 1977 as a display garden for rhododendrons has been transformed into a magnificent series of terraces with lakes, bridges, pavilions, Japanese Garden, Chinese Garden, North American Garden, all planted with a superb collection of cool climate plants. The combination of cool summers and almost frost-free conditions allows the 900 rhododendron species to grow happily.

Head to Launceston and check-in to our unique hotel for two nights. Peppers Silo Hotel is housed in a historic building with four 35m tall grain silos overlooking the Tamar River Basin and Cataract Gorge.

Tamar River (B/L)

A day to explore this mighty river. The day starts with a ‘discovery’ tour of Launceston’s lovely old ‘heritage-listed’ city buildings, restored and repainted, finishing with a coffee stop at the Queen Victoria Museum.

Travel along the Tamar River to Beauty Point, near its mouth on Bass Strait, to visit Seahorse World, a working seahorse farm.

After lunch (included) spend a relaxing afternoon with Susan Shannon at Waterton Hall. Taste their cool climate wines in the newly restored convict-built Waterton Hall Barn. Gardens here are being restored; cut flowers, roses and dahlias ready to bloom! Wander down to the boatshed and hear stories of the days when Waterton was a school for girls, run by the Sisters of St Joseph!

Woolmers Estate (B/L)

Clarendon is one of Australia’s most imposing and romantic pastoral homesteads. This magnificent house, attributed to convict architect, James Blackburn, features a double storey portico reminiscent of the mansions of the American South. Clarendon was built in 1838 and is set in seven hectares of parklands on the banks of the South Esk River. 

Learn the fascinating story of the Archer Family at Woolmers Estate. Thomas, William and Joseph, settled around Longford in the early 1800’s. The UNESCO World Heritage Listed Woolmers Estate is a unique reflection of colonial life and has beautiful gardens reflective of the period. Lunch is included today at Woolmers.

We’ll then continue on the Midland Highway to Hobart with a stop in historic Oatlands on the shores of Lake Dulverton. It’s one of Tasmania’s oldest settlements and consists of 87 original sandstone buildings, the largest collection in Australia. Arrive in Hobart and check-in to our hotel for three nights in the heart of Hobart.

Huon Valley (B/L)

First stop this morning is the famous Salamanca market. Tasmanian producers and designers make Salamanca Market unique.

We’re heading down the Huon Valley for a visit to Willie Smith’s Apple Shed, to learn about the history of the apple industry in the Huon, and the various heirloom apple varieties.

Crawleighwood Garden is our last stop today, a large country garden nestled in the hills at Nicholls Rivulet near Cygnet, with rhododendrons, deciduous azaleas, magnolias, maples; even the iconic Huon Pine.

Corinda Cottage (B/D)

Corinda Cottage is first this morning, a beautifully restored Victorian villa wrapped in a masterfully executed garden. It’s a gem; clipped parterre, pleached Linden hedge, exuberant flower borders, enticing paths and smothered arbours.

Free time this afternoon to explore Hobart or an optional visit to the phenomenal MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). Mona’s subterranean architecture showcases David Walsh’s $110m private collection of art and antiquities, as well as hosting a busy programme of exhibitions.

Time to relax in our hotel before our Farewell dinner  at famous Mures Upper Deck restaurant  this evening.

Royal Botanic Gardens (B/L)

Enjoy a guided walk in Hobart’s Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens set on the banks of the River Derwent. Established over 200 years ago, the 14-hectare garden includes a collection of rare and threatened species, unusual sub-Antarctic plants and a traditionally styled Japanese Garden amongst others.
